Garrett Detectors - Rumour
I was able to attend last nights BMDC meeting as my working hours have been all over the place this week. We were lucky enough to have Garrett Australia attend the meeting. It was good to meet both Adrian from Garrett Australia and David from The Open Range.
Now this is just a rumour but it seems there may be a couple of new detectors from Garrett mid year. Don't quote me on timings because we all know how things keep getting pushed back. They are giving very little away but one of the detectors will be the top of the range for Garrett (possibly a competitor for the Minelab CTX 3030). I asked if it would be wireless but did not get a response. I don't think it will have GPS as I overheard this in another conversation.
It also looks like we will start to get our own (Australian) advertising with Garrett products too. Look out for changes mid year.

Garrett Detectors at Next BMDC Meeting
This Thursday (Feb 21) is the next meeting of the BMDC (Brisbane Metal Detecting Club) and will be held at the Clubhouse at Bertha Street, Woolowin, Brisbane.David Lobwein from Open Range (Toowoomba) will be bringing along Adrian Kelly from Garrett Metal Detectors to the meeting.
This will be an excellent opportunity for any new members who have not yet purchased a detector to get some information on the Garrett detectors.

About to Bite the Bullet
Just returned from a 2 week working trip and I am about to bite the bullet. After months and months of research, chatting to experienced detectorists and emails to dealers on best prices, I have decided to purchase a Minelab CTX 3030.
What a tough decision, when I first started researching I was going to get the Garrett AT Pro. Then after a bit more research, it was going to be the Minelab Safari. After speaking with people, they suggested the Minelab E-TRAC over the Safari. When I started to research the E-TRAC I then started to get interested in the XP Deus. Then it just followed the natural progression to the Minelab CTX 3030.
For the last couple of weeks I have been comparing the CTX 3030 to the XP Deus (not physically, but that would have been great) by reading reviews and checking out all the forums. I tried not comparing the prices as I know the XP Deus would have won easily.
What swung it the way of the CTX 3030 is the following:
I know that the XP Deus has some of these features plus others (that the CTX 3030 hasn't) but having a local dealer close-by is really what won it for me.

- PC mapping (Mac compatible would be perfect, hurry up Minelab)
- Upgrades
- Colour display
- Target trace and Target seperation
I know that the XP Deus has some of these features plus others (that the CTX 3030 hasn't) but having a local dealer close-by is really what won it for me.
I will keep the XP Deus links and reviews in the Sidebar because if I can get the wife (or kids) interested, that will be the next purchase.

Choice of Detector
Well, I am getting much closer to making the choice of my first detector. It is now down to two and only one of those is from my three selections in my last blog.They are the XP Deus and the Minelab E-TRAC. After attending my first meeting of the Brisbane Metal Detecting Club last Thursday (17 Jan) and speaking with a few experienced members and one of the training officers, they all suggested the E-TRAC.
The prices are not too far off each other with the E-TRAC being the cheaper by approx. $150 (thats off the RRP). Another thing going for the E-TRAC is that one of the members of the club is a Minelab dealer. A lot of members have bought through him.Like I said in my last blog, the things I like about the XP Deus is the weight, it being wireless, up-dateable and rechargeable. Is it worth the extra $150 over the E-TRAC? I know a lot of people will be saying "no".
Honestly, I think it is going to come down to what discount the Minelab dealer can offer me. I am well into Andy Sabisch's book at the moment in the hope I am offered a reasonable discount.

My Dilemma With Choosing a New Detector
I'm in the market for a new metal detector. Well, actually, my first metal detector. If you look at the links on my blog, it is all geared towards the XP Deus. You might be thinking that I already have one or about to buy one.
Well, in the Australian market, you are looking at around $1950 for the XP Deus (5% discount if you are a member of the only Australian retailer). Now that is a lot of money for a first detector. But, if you think about, buying a cheaper brand/model, then selling, then buying another brand/model, then selling and vice versa. You are going to spend a lot more than $1950 before purchasing the metal detector you wanted in the first place.
However, you spend all that money at the beginning and then find out that metal detecting is not what you really expected and you lose interest.
I have 3 metal detectors that I am interested in. They are in 3 different price ranges and from 3 different manufacturers.
They include:
XP Deus: $1852.50 (with 5% discount from Prospectors Patch)

I have read all the reviews on these detectors and it doesn't make my decision any easier. There is not a lot of information on the Safari as most of the reviews are for its big brother, the E-TRAC.
I have ordered one product which was a no-brainer, the Garrett Pro-Pointer.

Welcome to my Blog
If you have found this page, then you are obviously interested in metal detecting. Well, before you start asking me questions about metal detecting, I need to declare that I am brand new to the hobby ( a newbie).
I have been interested since I was a kid. I remember when we use to live across the road from Sherwood State School in Brisbane. There use to be a man that would turn up in the afternoons with his metal detector and I would head over to help him dig. That must have been about 30yrs ago now.
I also remember my dad purchasing a metal detector from Dick Smith's but it could never find what that guy found all those years ago.
I have always had an interest in archaeology. I wish I had done that as my uni degree rather that what I ended up doing. Oh well, just glad that I have a good job and that's what counts.
I am a member of both the Council for British Archaeology and Time Team Digital even though I live in Australia. I will also be joining the Brisbane Metal Detecting Club in the New Year (2013).
With regards to metal detectors........at this moment I don't have one. However, that will change soon. I'll ask around at my first meeting at BMDC but my mind is pretty much made up.........it will be the XP Deus. The things I like about it are weight, wireless, 4 frequencies and both beginner and experienced users can grow with it.
